chuck hagel had the majority support, all the republicans in the senate, and the majority. it took this long to get him confirmed because republicans filibustered his nomination. nobody has ever done that before. nobody has ever before used a filibuster to block the confirmation of a cabinet nominee, ever in the history of our country, but they did it to chuck hagel. why? who knows? republicans in the senate pulled the fire alarm on this one, they broke glass in case of emergency. they did something that has never been done before in the history of the republic. and because they did it, there is now precedent for them to filibuster the next nominee. they broke glass for a nominee who in his case had bipartisan support to be confirmed. and the republicans in the senate did it in a way that didn't actually stop the confirmation. so you won nothing. but you did further break the institution where you work. there is an effort already under way to try to cover this up to say republicans did not really filibuster chuck hagel but they didn't really break the precedent here, and so

chuck hagel had nothing to do with the attack in benghazi. is that something they need to have on their resume? i filibustered one of the president's nominees. is that what they want? >> senator john mccain who once said he would oppose a filibuster of hagel because it would set "a bad precedent" is changing his tune. he tells "foreign policy magazine" my position right now is that i want an answer to the question. that question totally unrelated to chuck hagel as defense secretary is what president obama was doing during the benghazi attack. hagel remains in limbo, as does defense secretary leon panetta, who isn't exactly sure when he will be able to return to his california walnut groves. >> this is, i believe, my final press conference here at the pentagon briefing room. there are moments when i thought i was part of the last act of an italian opera. you're not sure exactly when it would end, and when the fat lady would sing. >> for now the only certainty is much more congressional uncertainty. joy, does leon panetta need a shirt that says

chuck hagel. if chuck hagel will take the job right now, god bless him. whoever secretary of defense, they are going to go through this constricting budget, implement things like females in combat, which i agree with, but in lamenting will be hard. something will come to head with iran in the next four years mathematically. it's going to be very difficult for years. i think he's got great background to bring to it. his time in vietnam is useful because it gives you context. the most important thing is if he and president obama are a good team, that's what matters. i don't much worry that policy positions because he's not going to be a policymaker. but the fact they feel they can be a good team to me is important. unless the president nominates somebody who's in my mind unqualified, i tend to think a leader should get who they want because we'll hold him responsible. >> thank you, general mcchrystal. we have to stop now. can't not [applause] >> next, set her effect on the otb in santa fe to discuss his book "blood and thunder: the epic story of kit carson

for 12 years, chuck hagel had a very pro-israeli voting record. he is somebody that is very committed to peace in the middle east. he knows the region. he is strong on israel. on iran, he made that comments 12 years ago. all of us have 30 years of public record of votes. i think you have to look at the context of him being nominated right now. he is a republican. he is from nebraska. he is a war hero. >> sean: i love nebraska but that is not a qualification. [ laughter ] >> i meant he is a conservative. you should like him. >> he has a voting record that would like yours. >> sean: no, it would not look like mine. he says the israelis, the palestinians are caged like animals. his comments, he got burned badly by lindsay graham, looked foolish and same with ted cruz and john mccain. he is not equipped to answer a single question. >> look obviously he is being political right now. would you not agree, even israelis would agree that the condition of the palestinian people is not ideal. that is why they want a two state solution. there is real disagree

ryan, listen to jay carney taking questions about chuck hagel and benghazi. here he is. >> what is unfortunate here is the continuing attempt to politicize an issue, in this case through nominees that themselves had nothing to do with benghazi, and to do so in a way that only does harm to our national security interests. >> so, ryan, just remind me again of what benghazi has to do with chuck hagel's nomination. >> well, nothing. and -- >> sorry, could you repeat that? >> it's -- >> sorry, repeat that, ryan. what does it have -- what does benghazi have to do with chuck hague snel. >> absolutely nothing. it's kind of like why would you take foreign policy advice from dick cheney. after the crash of '29, herbert hoover kept coming to republican conventions and giving these big speeches every four years, and every time he did it, democrats just celebrated because it reminded the entire country of how they got to where they are. so i would assume that democrats would actually encourage dick cheney, keep coming on television, keep giving the american people advice,

it was this really ham-handed fake effort to look like liberals were opposing chuck hagel, but nobody believed them and they stayed anonymous and never came out of the closet and said who they were. so no opposition on the democratic side of the aisle. no opposition on the left, except for the fake thing. and that means that the republicans would have to do something historically unprecedented and truly radical if they are going to stop chuck hagel's nomination. filibusters a cabinet nominee? unprecedented in modern times. now, they might try it. but it will be a huge deal if they did. a huge enough deal that it might even finally prompt the democrats to change the filibuster rules. so it's not likely. now, if you are looking for a high profile national security obama second term nominee who really might have some interesting opposition, who really might have some opposition from the democratic side, if not even from the left, it's not chuck hagel. obviously, it's not john kerry. the guy you are looking for is the one who is up this week. on thursday of this week, president obama's no
